It was a tale of two cities. First the Augustana Vikings crushed the SAIT Trojans 6-2 in front of the Camrose crowd on Feb. 10. Then the Trojans went to war in the rematch in Calgary and emerged victorious in a 7-2 contest.

Augustana has advanced to the playoffs on the women's side, but the picture isn't clear for the men,

"Our record is 5-13 and we have two games left with NAIT," explained Logan Gray. "There are a couple of factors that come into play. We either have to win one game against NAIT and another team loses, or we have to win both games against NAIT to guarantee us a spot in the playoffs."

The Alberta Junior Hockey League and the RBC Play Hockey Project revealed the finalists for the 2012 league awards.

Two finalists from each division were selected by the league’s general managers and coaches.  The award winners for each of the categories will be determined through voting by the AJHL managers and coaches following the completion of the regular season.

The Cougars roared at their own basketball tournament. Both the girls' and boys' Charlie Killam School junior high teams earned gold medals on Feb. 10 and 11.

The CK1 and CK2 girls played in one playoff game, where the CK2 girls advanced to the finals.

Our Lady of Mount Pleasant and New Norway girls played in another semifinal game, where the OLMP girls came up victorious.

Alberta NDP opposition leader Brian Mason is asking people to send their power bills to him.

“January’s power bill is a real eye popper for most homeowners,” said Mason, in a plea to receive some answers. “My family’s bill was double what it was a year ago. I want to table as many power bills as I can to prove to this government that deregulation is hurting Alberta families.”

Camrose area band Punch Drunk Cabaret is back by popular demand. Encore performances are keeping the band very busy.

The band will be rocking the Tap Room Bar and Brewery to help Sean Wilms and the gang at the Norsemen Inn celebrate the first anniversary on Feb. 24. The Brown Paperbags will open for the band beginning at 9 p.m.

Well known surface and property rights lawyer Keith Wilson will be the guest speaker at the Alberta Surface Rights Federation's annual general meeting in Camrose on Feb. 28.

Landowners from across the province will be attending the meeting to set new resolutions and listen to several speakers. However, all interested people are urged to attend to listen to the speakers.

Little Beaver Lake residents Irene Froese and Matt Picco have trapped 11 feral (wild and roaming) cats in their neighborhood.

"Over the past few years the cats have multiplied in the area, contaminating our property, so something had to be done," said Irene.

The 2012 one-act festival for the Big Valley region of the Alberta Drama Festival Association will be held at the Forestburg Community Centre in Forestburg on Saturday, February 18, at 7 p.m.

The Shoestring Actors Guild of Camrose, The Castor Little Theatre of Castor, and the Curtain Call Community Theatre of Forestburg have entered the one-act festival.
