Camrose's community leaders stepped up to the plate for the Battle River Community Foundation May 9.

The annual Professional Advisors' Luncheon at the Camrose Railway Station raised $13,100 for an endowment fund established by the Foundation to support its annual operating budget.

The fund totalled $630,625.61 at the close of business in 2011.

The Recycle with Centra Cam depot did booming business in 2011.

"We shipped 2,128 metric tonnes of recyclables in 2011, not including fluorescent tubes and paint," said Recycle with Centra Cam coordinator Terry Vickers.

"That's 106 loaded semi trailers, or nine semi trailers per month."

The Camrose Flying Club has held a Fly-in Breakfast for more than 55 years.

The tradition has been a good one for the community. With good weather, the airport will be one of the busiest in Western Canada again with around 150 aircraft and about 1,300 people stopping in for breakfast on Sunday, May 27.

Relay for Life in Camrose has hit the 10-year mark in hosting a 24-hour event. This year the event will also have a venue change to the EnCana Arena on June  22 and 23.

Last year the Camrose Relay For Life had 245 participants, on 24 teams, with the help of over 70 volunteers. The event celebrated over 100 cancer survivors and went on to raise $101,600.

"My calendar is starting to fill up," said Olson last week.

For the second straight year, Camrose Special Olympics has so many ball players that two teams will be fielded in a locally hosted tournament on June 24 at Kin Park.

A softball team has been assembled for about 15 years. However, Graham and Carol Wideman have expanded the program in the last two years to be able to field two teams with between 25 and 30 players.

Lena Szmadyla and a friend are going to have the chance to explore Ottawa.

Szmadyla was awarded a four-day vacation in the nation's capital last week as the winner of Pharmasave's  annual Exceptional Mother contest.

She and a friend will stay at the Lord Elgin Hotel, adjacent to the parliament buildings.

Gathering around a large radio to listen to popular music shows was a nightly highlight until television brought the stars to the screen.

One of the more famous country music shows in the United States was the Louisiana Hayride. Hall of Fame musicians Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Patsy Cline, Hank Williams and Jerry Lee Lewis all performed in the same radio studio.

Volunteers in Camrose and Wetaskiwin donned aprons and went to work serving hungry customers at McDonald's on McHappy Day May 2.

The restaurant donated one dollar from every Big Mac, McHappy Meal and any size hot McCafe beverage sold during the day to  Ronald McDonald House Northern Alberta and the Camrose/Wetaskiwin Special Olympics programs.

Mayor Marshall Chalmers and Reeve Don Gregorwich are inviting the community to a Camrose City and County Prayer Breakfast at the Norsemen Inn May 23.

"It's going to be an opportunity for us to celebrate," said Chalmers.

The breakfast will be building on the success of the first Mayor's Prayer Breakfast a year ago.

Evraz Camrose Works employees are entering their second week of a work stoppage.

After being served a 72-hour lockout notice from the pipe company on May 3, employees began picketing around the clock in front of Evraz Camrose Works at 9 a.m. on May 5.

The mill is still operating with manpower from supervisors, lab staff and non-union employees.
