Camrose resident Wanita Voytechek won the gold medal in the baking component of Skills Alberta at the Expo Centre in Edmonton May 15 and 16.

Wanita will now represent Alberta at the Skills Canada national competition to be held in Vancouver in June.

Mackenzie Doll earned a gold medal in the National Wheelchair Basketball Championships. Her team won the gold medal in Longueil, Quebec, on April 28.

Doll was part of the Edmonton Inferno women's team that qualified for the nationals. Six teams from across the nation battled for the medals.

The best cyclist in Canada will be entered in the Tour of Alberta on Sept. 3 to 6 and stop in Camrose at the end of the first leg on Sept. 4.

Tour of Alberta confirmed that Team Garmin Sharp will be participating in the event and Canadian star cyclist Ryder Hesjedal, the winner of the 2012 Giro D'Italia, is on that team.

The Edmonton Blackhawks needed an extra inning to beat the Camrose Axemen 5-1 in North Central Alberta Baseball League action on Harry Andreassen Field at Kin Park on May 14.

Camrose scored first in the fifth inning when catcher Ryan Borman crossed the plate. Edmonton fought back with one in the sixth, which eventually led to an extra inning.

The Canadian Pilots and Owners Association and Camrose Flying Club will be offering a COPA for Kids program at the Bashaw Airport June 9 and the Camrose Airport June 16.

The Battle River Community Foundation and Duggan Cinemas partnered in the Midnight Movie Marathon to raise about $2,767 to assist community organizations.

The funds were raised by the 25 participants in the Movie Marathon and the 134 people who sponsored them to watch five movies over night from March 23 to 24.

The Camrose Cruisers Car Show, 100-Footer and Cruise will be held on Main Street and at the Camrose Regional Exhibition on May 24 to 26.

"New this year will be side-by-side racing on Exhibition Drive," said an excited Ken Mah, one of the organizers of the event. "The pavement is smoother and it will be a lot of fun."

Camrose Composite High School hosted the city-county track meet on May 15 in the first round of the senior high track and field season.

The top athletes moved on to the area meet held at CCHS on May 22. Long distance runner Brenden Hilgartner ran in the 800m, 1,500m and 3,000m events in the first meet and is now looking forward to the area competition.

A group of talented Camrose musicians formed Bailey's Buckaroos to put together an afternoon concert for country music fans. The show will be held at 2 p.m., on May 26, in the Bailey Theatre.

The Buckaroos are Dan Olofson on bass guitar, Stan Kontek on steel guitar, Jordan Leden on lead guitar, Norm Taylor on drums, Rudy Famulak on fiddle and Curtis Bessette on lead guitar.
